NSF International Provides Educational Information to Celebrate Drinking Water Week

Ann Arbor, Mich (Vocus)-- Each year organizations involved in treating and supplying our nation's drinking water celebrate Drinking Water Week, the first week in May. This year's celebration runs from May 3rd through May 9th. NSF International, a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Water and Food Safety and Indoor Environment, is offering free educational information to help consumers understand their role in protecting the nation's water supply.

The NSF Consumer Affairs Office has developed a Water Fact Kit (http://www.nsf.org/consumer/newsroom/kit_water.asp?program=WaterTre) designed to help educate consumers on water quality and water conservation issues. Some of the materials in the fact kit include:

NSF's drinking water week web page (http://www.nsf.org/consumer/drinking_water/dw_water_week.asp?program=WaterTre) also contains a variety of educational activities, including a water usage experiment to help kids understand how much water a leaky faucet wastes, a water activity book and educational articles on drinking water contaminants and treatment options. For more than 40 years, NSF has been helping to protect the quality of drinking water by testing and certifying products that come in contact with drinking water- from the time when water is withdrawn from the source or well until it arrives at the faucet. NSF works with government, industry and product users to verify that the water treatment products that receive NSF Certification continue to meet rigorous standards.

Background on Drinking Water Week

Since 1988, the EPA, AWWA and other organizations within the drinking water treatment industry, including NSF International, have dedicated this week to our most precious natural resource ¬- water. Public and private water utilities sponsor several activities and provide a wide array of educational services to their customers. Water tasting contests, tours of water treatment facilities, and storytelling are just a few of the ways communities celebrate this important event.

In addition to water safety, NSF also offers information on many other public health and safety issues, such as food safety, dietary supplements, disaster preparedness, hand washing (www.scrubclub.org) and other issues that impact the entire family's health and safety.
